There are few writers better qualified to write a novel such as this, in which the AT is its own character that ties together a handful of colorful personalities who are tackling the challenge of going the distance. Since Judy, a freshly minted UGA grad, first completed the trail some 40 years, he’s had a lifelong love affair with the AT and its denizens. He brings a novelist’s sharp eye to the vagaries and mundanity of life along the AT and weaves a tale that is both compelling and, at times, heartbreaking.
